HONORS "COMMON THEMES 2009" - THURSDAY, MAY 7 9:00-11:00AM & 1:00-3:30PM!

Common Themes 2009

Supposedly, the more affluent we get, the better off we should be. But, is that always the case? Join Spanish A185H and History 102H students on Thursday, May 7 to discuss the Paradox of Affluence. In poster presentations in the morning (9:00-11:00am), Spanish A185H students will explore the paradox in Spanish-speaking countries; in short talks in the afternoon (1:00-3:30pm), History A102H students will explore how great empires have carried within them the seeds of their own destruction. Join the honors Spanish 185 class on Thursday, May 7th as we head over to UC Irvine… and into the future! Cosecha Latina/Latin Harvest is proud to present “Sleep Dealer”, winner of the Amnesty International Film Prize at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival, and two awards at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. 2008 Recognition Ceremony and Reception

The annual Honors Program Recognition Ceremony and Reception will take place this year on Friday, May 22nd from 6:00 to approximately 8:30pm. If you expect to complete the Honors Program this year and wish to be recognized on May 22nd, you MUST contact Terry Scarbrough in the Academic Honors Office by Wednesday, May 6th at noon (714.432.5601, hpro@occ.cccd.edu).  All HP students and faculty are encouraged to attend; HP students who are completing the Program by the end of this academic year may also invite family and friends. Expect more information soon; but, if you wish to reserve your spot now, just contact our office.

MEGHAN CASSIDY-- ON HER WAY TO THE NATIONAL HONORS CONFERENCE!

Congratulations to Meghan Cassidy, the first OCC honors student to be accepted to present at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference. Meghan will present her research poster, "Comparison of Vascular Access Devices for Cancer Patients", in late October/beginning November, 2009 in Washington D.C. MARK ROESSLER-- OCC PART-TIME FACULTY MEMBER OF THE YEAR FOR THE THIRD TIME!

Congratulations to Mark Roessler, who has been voted OCC's Part-Time Faculty Member of the Year for the third time!  Professor Roessler has taught at OCC for 15 years, and has taught Honors Political Science almost since the Honor Program's inception.  Click here to read more about this outstanding professor of Political Science-- how he's making a difference in the world, and why students pack his classrooms.

More congratulations to Dr. Tom Garrison, who has just been named OCC's first-ever Distinguished Professor by the OCC Academic Senate! Co-founder of the OCC Honors Program and honors faculty in Marine Science, Dr. Garrison also celebrates his 40th year of teaching at OCC this year (see below). Congratulations to Dr. Tom Garrison, who this year celebrates his 40th year of teaching at Orange Coast College! Dr. Garrison is a co-founder of the OCC Honors Program and is honors faculty in Marine Science. THREE OCC STUDENTS' WORK TO BE PUBLISHED IN HONORS CREATIVE WORKS JOURNAL

Congratulations to the following three students, whose work will be appear in the 2009 edition of Scribendi, a journal of art and literature published by the Western Regional Honors Council. These talented students were honored at a reception during the 2009 WRHC Conference in Spokane, Washington on March 6.
