The Second Half is just the beginning...

  • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the #1 killer of Americans.
  • Falls are the leading cause of accidental death among older adults; 40% of nursing home placements are a result of falls.
  • Obesity is the second leading cause of premature illness and death.
  • An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and the number continues to grow.

The Second Half.

A regular exercise program can decrease our risk of suffering from these and other conditions, conditions that can affect the quality of our lives.

If you are looking for a positive exercise environment where you will learn what to do and why, come to Orange Coast College. We have expert faculty members who will help you develop an exercise program tailored to your needs, one that is realistic and fits into your lifestyle.

The Second Half is a program to motivate active adults to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Senior Fitness
We are more than just another fitness program for “seniors.”

Our goal is to increase the quality of life in the second half using a holistic/wellness approach. This is a multifaceted approach that integrates physical, mental and social facets into programming.

We want to help you reach your human potential during the best time of your life. Let us help motivate you to be an active adult who leads a healthy lifestyle.

What is Different About Our Program?

  • Seniors in the Weight Room
Our program is held at a college
  • Our program provides quality, degreed instructors with many years of experience and expertise.
  • Our goal is multifaceted – not just physical fitness but also social and mental “fitness.”
  • We are sensitive to the different reasons for participating in a wellness program; we have a place for those who are physically active as well as for those who are sedentary and want to become more physically active.
  • We understand that many have grown up with erroneous information about diet/exercise and health; therefore, we will provide correct information about health and wellness.
  • The cost is less than at a gym or health club – for the services and faculty support, OCC is the best deal around.

Course Offerings

Physical Education 124AD - Strength & Balance
Mobility issues faced by senior adults are often a result of poor muscular strength and endurance. This course will help improve your overall strength, an important component to a healthy lifestyle. In addition, balance and stability concepts will be explored and specific exercise taught and practiced.

Physical Education 127AD - Cardio & Stretch
As older adults become more sedentary, they lose the ability to sustain activity, which further contributes to their sedentary lifestyle. This course will improve your cardiovascular endurance and flexibility.
