MIKE TAYLOR
Head Coach
11th Season, 45-58 (.437)
Marking his 24rd season as a part of the Orange Coast program and more than 30 overall as both a coach and player, Mike Taylor is beginning his 11th season as the head coach of the Pirates.
The former Oregon State standout and all-Pacific Eight Scholastic Team linebacker in 1974, Taylor begins season No. 29 in the coaching ranks. He arrived at Coast in 1986 from Laguna Hills High School.
Beginning his coaching career in 1976 at Santa Ana, Taylor joined former Coast kingpin Bill Workman at Edison high the following year for four seasons, helping the Chargers to the first of back-to-back CIF Big Five Conference crowns in 1979.
His tenure at Laguna Hills began in 1980 where he was the defensive coordinator for four years. He took a one-year sabbatical from Laguna Hills in 1983 to be the head coach at Placer High in Auburn, CA.
Taylor earned his bachelor of science from Oregon State, a teaching credential at Cal State Fullerton and a master of arts from Cal State Long Beach.
In his spare time, Taylor enjoys working out, playing golf and skiing. He and his wife, Jo Ann, who graduated from OCC in 1972, live in Huntington Beach. They have two daughters, Nicole and Melanie.
SCOTT ORLOFF
Defensive Coordinator
After spending his first three seasons working with the defensive lineman, eighth-year coach Scott Orloff will begin his fifth year as defensive coordinator while also working with the secondary. Orloff has over 25 years of coaching experience under his belt, spending three years as head coach at Santa Ana Valley High School and six years as the head coach at Dana Hills High School. Among his many coaching highlights includes his selection as the head coach of the 2000 South Orange County All-Star football team. Orloff and his wife, Kristin, reside in Mission Viejo with their two boys, David and Daniel. When not with his family or on the football field, Orloff enjoys playing golf in his spare time.
DOUG SMITH
Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line
Doug Smith enters the 2008 season with his 10th campaign as a Coast assistant. A 14-year NFL veteran, Smith earned six trips to the Pro Bowl as a member of the Los Angeles Rams. Smith, a native of Columbus, Ohio, played collegiately at Bowling Green University before being drafted by the Rams. He was a member of the Rams' 1979 Super Bowl team. Before coming to Coast, Smith coached offensive and defensive line at USC. Smith resides in Mission Viejo with his wife, Debbie. They have two daughters, Jessica and Jenna and one son, Cole.
STEVE FULLMER
Running Backs
The Coast ground game will once again be under the direction of Steve Fullmer, back for his seventh season as part of Mike Taylor’s staff. In 2004, Fullmer had the chance to have his son, Morgan, on the squad with him and in 2007, his younger son, Aaron, joined the Pirates’ squad. When not on the practice field with the Pirates, Fullmer is a chiropractor and has his own practice in Huntington Beach where he resides.
JOEL WITTENBERG
Defensive Line
The defensive line will once again be watched over for a fifth season by Joel Wittenberg. A graduate of the University of Arizona, Wittenberg brings 13 years of coaching experience to the Pirates’ staff. Prior to arriving at Coast, Wittenberg spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Trabuco Hills High School. Before heading over to Coast in the afternoons, Wittenberg teaches economics and United States history at Trabuco Hills, before coming to OCC to coach. He and his wife, Lisa, reside in Lake Forest with their two sons, Thomas and Andrew.
JUNIOR TAGALOA
Tight Ends/Special Teams
Back for his ninth season as an OCC coach, Junior Tagaloa brings plenty of personal experience to the players. As a player for Coast in 1986-87, Tagaloa set several receiving records, including career marks in receptions (119), touchdown receptions (22) and yards by a receiver (2,132). He also holds single-season records for TD catches (17) and yards by a receiver (1,190) as well as the single-game record of 209 receiving yards, set against Palomar in 1987. Following his All-American career at Coast, Tagaloa played under Bruce Snyder at Cal where he earned his degree. He, his wife Wendy, and his daughter, Kailualani, live in Costa Mesa.
JOE KAUO
Defensive Line
Coaching the defensive line for the third straight season is Joe Kauo. With 25 years of coaching experience, Joe returns to the Pirates after successful coaching stints at Santa Ana Valley and Dana Hills. In 1995, Joe helped SAVHS to the Century League title and at Dana Hills, he contributed to CIF playoff appearances in 1997 and 2000. Currently, Joe teaches English at Dana Hills High School when he’s not on the OCC football field. Joe resides in Trabuco Canyon with his wife Karen and their two sons John and Jason. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
VINCE STRANG III
Wide Receivers
Former OCC standout WR Vince Strang III returns to the coaching ranks for his second season on Taylor's staff. A two-year standout at OCC, Strang led the receiving corps in 2001 with 30 receptions for 602 yards and continued his playing career at UC Berkley, where he earned the Stub Alison Award his senior season. At OCC, he was named Team Captain and won the team’s Most Inspirational and Special Teams Player of the Year honors. Following his collegiate career, Strang played one season of Arena Football for the San Diego Riptide and two stints in the Canadian Football League for the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Eskimos. Kevin is single and resides in Huntington Beach, where he enjoys playing beach volleyball, golfing and going to the lake.
JOHN YOUNG
Linebackers
In his second year of his second stint on the Pirate sidelines, John Young continues his fine work with the OCC linebackers, just as he did for eight seasons from 1989-1996. Young’s LBs were one big piece of OCC’s Mission Conference championship puzzle in 1990. Prior to his first stint with Coast, Young was a defensive coordinator for Saddleback High School, where he helped lead the Roadrunners to a CIF championship in 1985 a Sea View League title in 1986 and a trip to the CIF semifinals in 1988. Not just skilled as a football coach, Young also coached the SHS baseball team from 2002-2006. In his playing days, Young attended UC Davis and was a three-year player for the Aggies. John and his wife, Lisa, live in Irvine and have three kids, Brandi, Zak and Danielle. When he’s not coaching, Jim enjoys playing golf in his spare time.
DANIEL BARRINGTON
Assistant Offensive Line
Once again, helping out with the offensive line coaching duties for the Pirates will be Daniel Barrington. Barrington has over four years of coaching experience after coming to OCC from Huntington Beach High School. Barrington, who was born on Feb. 12, 1985, is single and resides in Huntington Beach.
