Transferring to a California State University System – Multiple Subject Credential

If you are interested in transferring to a California State University for teaching in an elementary school (working towards a multiple subject credential) there are several factors to consider when creating your educational plan;

  • General education requirements
  • University transfer requirements
  • Major preparation
  • CSET preparation
  • Credential program preparation
Elementary Classroom

Following the Multiple Subject Teacher Education Program Transfer Model to CSU, Phase One, you will satisfy GE requirements. Additional units will be completed in Phase Two depending on your transfer school choice to satisfy transfer requirements and Liberal Studies major preparation.

Elementary school teachers must prepare in subjects consisting of language arts, science, mathematics, social science, visual and performing arts, physical education and human development. The courses required in the Transfer Model to CSU will provide a solid foundation in this required subject matter.

Multiple subject credential candidates may also major in any subject of their choice, prepare and pass the CSET Exams, then enter a credential program as a graduate student. This is the traditional route to earning teaching credentials.

For admission into a CSU integrated credential program, students must also have:

  • A passing score on CBEST or CSET writing exam
  • A GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Documented Early Fieldwork (EDUC 200)

Transferring to a California State University System – Single Subject Credential

If you are interested in transferring to a California State University for teaching in a middle or high school (working towards a single subject credential) there are several factors to consider when creating your educational plan;

  • General education requirements
  • University transfer requirements
  • Major preparation
  • CSET preparation
  • Credential program preparation
High School Classroom

Students who are planning to teach middle school or high school should select General Education courses and a major that develops subject matter knowledge in the subject they will teach. This subject matter preparation may be satisfied by passing the CSET Exam or by successfully completing a specific plan of coursework that waives the examination requirement.
For an educational plan that prepares you to transfer to a university for a single subject credential program, please consult a TEACh3 coordinator or Orange Coast College counselor.
