OCC Chapter to Host the
2010 AGS Southern Regional Conference
"Learning the Ropes"

Orange Coast College will host the 2010 Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society's 2010 Fall Southern Regional Conference, “Learning the Ropes" on Saturday, Oct. 30th.

Martin Diedrich | Martin Diedrich, founder of Deidrich Coffee and Kéan Coffee in Newport Beach, will present the keynote address. Recognized as one of the world’s most respected master coffee roasters, Diedrich will describe the trials and tribulations of starting a business as well as difficult ethical issues entrepreneurs face when they launch a successful enterprise.
The day will feature two sessions of presentations by volunteer guest speakers, a picnic box lunch in the Horticulture Garden, an afternoon keynote address, election of a regional student representative and alternate to the AGS State Board of Trustees, a donation drive to benefit the Phoenix House drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, and an opportunity drawing.
At 9:15 a.m. chapter officers: Kelsey Bertels, President; Steven Baker, Vice-President; June Pham, Treasurer; and Jasmine Thwe, Secretary, will present welcoming remarks in the Science Hall followed by two sessions of informative talks and demonstrations.
Presentation topics include: Creating and Living on a Budget, Eating Healthfully on Campus and Off, Greening Our Lives the Easy Way, Travelling Abroad for the First Time, New Voter Savvy, The Role of School Boards and Why You Should Care, Basic Self-Defense/Guided Meditation, Building and Maintaining Good Credit, Disaster Preparedness, Positive Psychology and Values-Based Decision-Making.
Recognition certificates will be presented to each of the morning’s volunteer speakers, including Mary Hornbuckle, Coast Community College District Trustee; Steve Goetz, OCC Counselor Emeritus; and Mike Carey, OCC Recycling Center Director.
Alpha Gamma Sigma is the California Community College Scholastic Honor Society. AGS encourages development of leadership skills, global understanding and social conscientiousness through campus and community service projects.
