Courses are offered in the following sequence:
First semester (180) classes focus on beginning competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing. They are designed for students who need to fulfill a language requirement and for those who wish an introduction to the important aspects of the language and related cultures. (5 units)
Second semester (185) classes are a continuation of the 180-level classes and emphasize correct use of the language through basic conversations. Reading, writing and grammar basics are expanded through selected literary works and cultural awareness. (5 units)
Third semester (280) classes are a continuation of the 185-level classes with review and further study of the language's grammar, idioms and cultures. They also include written composition of current topics and oral work at an intermediate level. (4-5 units)
Fourth semester (285) classes concentrate on oral and written expression based on grammar review and readings on literature and culture. (4-5 units)
