International Honor Society of the Two-Year College

Modeled after Phi Beta Kappa, the prestigious honor society for four-year colleges,
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society for two-year colleges in the world,
established in 1918 and now headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi.

PTK enrolls qualified students across all academic disciplines and currently boasts
over 200,000 members globally. Additionally, PTK sponsors over $30 million in scholarships.

Phi Theta Kappa offers each of its members outstanding opportunities
to develop strengths in four important areas, referred to as "Hallmarks." They are:

Leadership, Scholarship, Fellowship, and Service

The colors for Phi Theta Kappa are blue, for scholarship, and gold, for purity.

The Golden Key became Phi Theta Kappa's official emblem and the design for the membership pin. The Key is a golden slab, keyed at the top and bottom. Across the center of the slab is a black enamel band upon which three Greek letters appear, which are the initials of three mystic Greek words meaning phronimon (Phi), thumos (Theta), katharotes (Kappa) and meaning wisdom, aspiration and purity. Behind the band is a wreath, on one side composed of oak leaves, and on the other, of laurel. The wreath of oak leaves denotes stability and strength of character, and the curling leaves of laurel signify achievement and success. Above the band is a representation of the head of Athena, Goddess of Learning; in the base appear the mystic Greek letters meaning light, the light of learning and knowledge (http://www.ptk.org/about/milestones.htm).

How will you make a difference
in the next few months?

PTK Chapter collects funding and over a half ton of pasta donations in Fall 2010. Anaheim motel kids will be eating a hot meal nightly for months to come.

Your donations and generous contributions from the local community during the Fall 2010 semester helped us reach our goal of providing enough pasta to provide the Anaheim Motel Kids with approximately 37,500 meals. PTK members and officers promoted the drive among their classmates, family and neighbors who donated boxes of dry spaghetti or made contributions payable to the OCC Foundation (which were fully tax deductible). Drop boxes for pasta donations were located in Watson Hall, Literature & Languages Building, and in the Music Department. Extra credit and tax deduction receipts were issued for pasta and cash donations delivered to the Honors Office - Watson Hall 287. A spring encore is in the works! Watch for further announcements!

ONGOING: "Book Drives for Better Lives"
Please donate any and all of your used books, educational videos, or unwanted DVD collections for this worthy project. Books may be dropped into any on-campus collection box (find them in lobbies of Chemistry, Lit&Lang, Student Center, and Watson Hall). Sorry, no encyclopedia sets, please.

Faculty: phone us for a pick up when you clear out your office:

NEW: Membership Recruitment Campaign - Spring 2011
Pre-qualified candidates will receive invitations to lifetime PTK membership based on their outstanding academic performances through Fall 2010. Invitations will be sent via email during the week of January 31. April 1 is the deadline for applications. Students who feel that they are qualified but who do not receive an application may download the application from "Applying for Membership" page of this website. Applications with dues payments will be accepted at the Academic Honors Office - Watson Hall 287.

NEW: Inkjet Cartridge Fundraiser/Recycling
Don't know what to do with all those little inkjet cartridges you've been collecting? How about donating them to our fundraiser/recycling drive? Drop off any and all brands of small (palm-sized) inkjet cartridges in a collection container on campus. We'll ship them to a recycler for reconditioning and reuse; they'll send back a little money to our chapter for each one they receive. Containers are located in the Academic Honors Office and (TBA - check back soon for list of current locations).
