| Most of the language courses include a required listening component. Depending on the course and textbook used, you'll either complete this component by listening to audio cassettes or to audio files online. | | Audio Cassettes In order to complete the listening component of your course by listening to audio cassettes, you'll need to do the following: - At the campus bookstore, request a blank audio cassette ($2-3); indicate that it is for a language class.
- Take the cassette to the Language Laboratory/Distribution Center (Lit&Lang 223; see picture at right). Give it to the attendant, and indicate your course and instructor's name. The attendant will take your blank cassette and exchange it for a cassette with your course's current chapter on it.
- As your class moves on to the next chapter, take your cassette back to the Distribution Center, and exchange it for a cassette with the next chapter on it (note that some cassettes contain two chapters, so you may not have to exchange the cassette after every chapter).
- In general, the Distribution Center only has available cassettes with the current chapter(s); previous chapters are not kept around. If you wish to retain copies of all chapters for later review, either (1) buy enough new blank cassettes at the bookstore to hold all chapters covered during the semester, or (2) before exchanging a recorded cassette for the next chapter(s), make a copy of it for yourself: remember that only the cassettes that you use to make exchanges need to come from the bookstore.
- The Language Laboratory/Distribution Center is located in Lit&Lang 223, and is typically open during the following hours: MTWR 8am-7pm, F 8am-5pm. Hours are also posted on the door.
| | | Audio Files Online In all levels of Spanish (180, 185, 280, 285), as well as the first three levels of Italian (180, 185, 280), listening exercises are completed online as part of an electronic workbook/lab manual that is accessed through a site called QUIA™. In general, the access code (or "book key") to sign up for the online workbook/lab manual comes packaged with your textbook when you purchase it new at the OCC bookstore, and your instructor will provide you with instructions for signing up with QUIA™. If you purchase your textbook used at the OCC Bookstore (or, if you purchase it new or used somewhere else), you'll need to purchase the online workbook/lab manual book key separately. Ask your instructor how to do so on the first day of class. | Internet Access on Campus If you need to complete the listening component of your course online, but do not have (speedy) internet access at home, there are computers available for student use at the John R. Clark Computing Center, as well as at the OCC Library. |
