The Orange Coast College Dance Certificate Program is unique among Vocational Education programs offered at the community college level. Students may earn a Certificate of Achievement in three areas: Dance Instructor, World Dance and Dance Conditioning/Pilates Instructor.

The Dance Certificate Program is designed to give the serious dance student theory, applied training and performing experience required for employment in commercial and artistic areas of dance. Required courses employ both classroom work and INTERNSHIP experiences in business/industry to prepare the student for job requirements.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS
Students completing a Certificate Program will be able to:

  1. instruct others in a variety of dance techniques and styles.

  2. apply principles of movement and creativity to all forms of dance

  3. communicate effectively through movement and words

  4. utilize information learned in other disciplines to the art form of dance

  5. develop skills required to work in commercial or artistic areas of dance

THE DANCE INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATE
The Dance Instructor Certificate trains students for positions in the commercial and artistic areas of dance. Graduates of the program would be qualified as instructors in ballet, modern, jazz and tap dance in private studios, recreation or other community dance programs. The Dance Department also recommends the students complete their General Education Requirements for an Associate Degree.

Students are able to apply priciples of movement and creativity to all forms of dance, demonstrate skills of instructing dance to communicate through movement and words, and apply information learned in other disciplines to the art form of dance.

Instruction will utilize both classroom work, using a variety of instructional methods (lecture/lab demonstrations, independent and group projects) and internship experiences in business/industry to prepare the student for job requirements.

THE WORLD DANCE CERTIFICATE
The World Dance Certificate trains students for position in the commercial and artistic areas of dance. Graduates of the program would be qualified as instructors in private studios, recreation or other community dance programs and act as consultants, lecturers, or perfomers with an emphasis on the ethnic dance forms, primarily Mid-Eastern, Flamenco, Spanish Classical, East Indian, or African (Nigeria/Ghana). The Dance Department also recommends the students complete their General Education Requirements for an Associate Degree.

Students are able to apply priciples of movement and creativity to all forms of dance, demonstrate skills of instructing dance to communicate through movement and words, and apply information learned in other disciplines to the art form of dance.

THE DANCE CONDITIONNG/PILATES INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATE
The Pilates/Dance Conditioning Instructor Certificate of Completion prepares the student to teach in a privately owned dance, fitness or Pilates studio, recreational facility or health club. The student takes theory and technique classes on Pilates apparatus taught by Pilates certified specialists and learns methods to determing appropriate conditioning programs for people of all ages and physical conditions.

To prepare the student for employment, instruction uses both classroom work with a variety of instructional methods (lecture, lab/demonstration, independent and group projects) and internship experiences in dance and fitness facilitites.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURES
Any high school graduate is eligible for admission to Orange Coast College if he/she meets residency requirements. Non-high school graduates age 18 or older may also be admitted. To enroll in classes at OCC, an application should be filed with the Dean of Admissions and Records. Applications can be obtained in person, by mail or online application.
