Our division is home to the Departments of Communications , Education , English , English as a Second Language , Speech Communication and World Languages (including French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Vietnamese). We offer a variety of core courses that thousands of OCC students take every year, for personal enrichment, to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, or for both reasons.
In addition, we sponsor or help support an assortment of valuable programs. The Department of English and the Department of World Languages work in conjunction with OCC’s Honors Program in order to offer honors courses in English and Spanish. The Department of Education houses the grant-funded TEACh3 program that helps put OCC students on a fast-track to becoming certified public school teachers. Our Speech and Debate Team, sponsored by the Department of Speech Communication, has won many local, state and national titles, including an impressive seventh national championship in 2002. Also award-winning is the Coast Report, the campus newspaper produced by students through the Department of Communications. In the wake of the budget-driven dismantling of the District’s Study Abroad Program, individual Literature and Language faculty members have taken on additional responsibilities in order to continue to offer the rewarding experience of Study Abroad to interested students.
In both core areas and specialized programs, our division prides itself on being student-oriented. Our faculty strive to provide students with opportunities for academic and personal growth, and our greatest reward is in knowing that we have helped students participate in intellectually and emotionally enriching experiences.
Whether you are already a student at OCC, or are merely browsing our division home page, we look forward to having the opportunity to serve you, too.
