  • The face of the land changes.
  • The use of the land changes.
  • From rude terrain, man laboriously creates a garden. The land is tilled --
the soil is turned -- crops are harvested.
  • War! Plowshares give way to cannon.  Men march across the land in
martial columns. Stark rows of grey barracks streak the soil.  Taps are sounded.
  • The peace is won. New uses are found for the land. The flag remains. But
now it flies above library and schoolroom. Desks and blackboards replace
the armaments of war. A school is born.
  • Tumbleweeds to Roses is the story of a blessed corner of the universe. It
relates the history of a low-lying plot of ground, some 244 acres, lying
four miles off the coast of Southern California, latitude 33' 39' North,
longitude 117' 56' West. It tells of the changes that took place over the
years in the use of the land; of the men and women who playeo active roles
in the changes that took place; and of the accomplishments and achievements
    resulting from these changes.
  • Tumbleweeds To Roses is a history of cultural development, of transition
from a barren wasteland to a seedbed for tomorrow's growth. It is the
story of the birth, growth, and development of Orange Coast College. Above
all, it is the story of what Dr. Basil H. Peterson has been to our college.

NORMAN E. WATSON, EDD.
(successor to Basil H. Peterson as he
retired in 1964, OCC Administrator since
1952)
