Welcome to the OCC Staff Development Web Site. We hope that you have marked us as one of your favorite links so that you can keep informed of the many professional development opportunities that we advertise for faculty, staff and managers.

All faculty, staff and managers may enroll in Staff Development Workshops. Full-time faculty are eligible to earn salary advancement credit by attending or offering Staff Development Workshops. 18 hours of Staff Development credit = 1 unit of salary advancement credit

You can
enroll in a workshop online. The first time you register for a class online, you must contact Staff Development, 432-5920 or x26238.

About Staff Development

  • Provides you with contact information for our office and the members of the Staff Development Steering Committee
Articles and Presentations
  • Provides you with links to articles and presentations about teaching.  Some are written and presented by OCC Faculty and others are online articles related to community college teaching

Conferences

  • Keeps you informed of upcoming professional conferences. Remember to apply six weeks in advance to the Senate or Staff Development Office if you are applying for funding. Faculty note that you may be able to earn salary advancement credit for attending lectures and workshops offered off-campus that are related to professional development in your discipline.

New Faculty Handbook

  • The New Faculty Handbook is intended particularly for new full-time and part-time faculty, but is a useful reference for all faculty.  It is updated yearly and provides extensive information in all areas related to teaching at OCC.  MyOCC information has also been added.
News and Events
  • Keeps you informed of ongoing and recent faculty and staff development activities on the OCC campus  
  • Links you to the weekly online Staff Development Newsletter

  • Photos of past Staff Development events, as well as a Staff Development Newsletter archive

PDI Handbook

  • The PDI handbook is produced by PDI (the Academic Senate Professional Development Institute)
  • The handbook describes the methods by which full-time faculty can earn salary advancement credit while engaging in professional development activities
  • The PDI Handbook is currently being revised, and will be available soon
Recognition
  • Keeps you informed of the annual recognition of faculty and staff members of the year, as well as other awards and recognitions given to Orange Coast College faculty and staff

Visiting Scholars
  • The Visiting Scholars Program is funded by the OCC Foundation.  Faculty may apply for grants up to $7,500 per semester to fund a Visiting Scholar Symposium.  The Visiting Scholar will be the keynote speaker for a campus symposium organized around a particular theme.  The Scholar's presentation must be supplemented by at least one interdisciplinary faculty panel, whose members address the symposium's theme from the perspective of their discipline. 
  • Visiting Scholar Symposia include Anatomy as Art, with Dr. Dean Edell;  Morality and Art, with Director Moises Kaufmann;  Community Engagement, with author Le Ly Hayslip; Culture and Imperialism, with Dr. Ngugi wa Thiongo;  Changing the World One Story at a Time, with author Dorothy Allison; Celebrating Film and Culture, with Tony Huston; The History that Made us and the History we are Making, with Edward James Olmos; It's Greek to me, with Eugenia Manolides and Adonis Georgiadis; Perfect Spy, The OCC Undergraduate who Became the Most Heralded Communist Spy of the Vietnam War, with Larry Berman; Plastic Religion, Religious Creativity in Popular Culture, with David Childester; Louisiana's Story Through Cuisine and Culture, with Chef John Folse; Mayan Calendar:  2012 & The End of The World, with Dr. Edwin Barnhart; Voyaging Adventures and Discoveries, with History Professor and President Emeritus, David Grant
Workshop Schedule
  • Current workshops being offered, complete with descriptions and class number used for registration.  
  • Allows you to enroll for classes and workshops offered at OCC
Your Contract
  • Every eighteen units of staff development credit that you accumulate counts as one unit of salary advancement credit. Units can be transferred from one year to the next.
