That musical chorus, sung originally written my country singer Ryan Shupe, perfectly sums up the 2009 baseball season for Orange Coast College. 
 
In a season filled with sadness, grief, frustration and even anger, the Pirates managed to find focus and determination through it all and on Monday, their hard work was rewarded with a state baseball championship.

SAN MATEO -- It's only fitting that Cassie Mitchell put forth a scorching time under such scorching temperatures this past weekend, winning two state titles and setting a new national record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2009 State Track and Field Championships, held at College of San Mateo.

Baseball: FRESNO BOUND! PIRATES PUNCH TICKET TO STATE FINAL FOUR!
 
COSTA MESA -- "It was the game of my life."
 
That quote came from Orange Coast College starting pitcher Calvin Drummond shortly after his complete-game, 16-strikeout performance lifted the Pirates into the State Final Four, courtesy of a 7-1 win over Mt. San Jacinto on Sunday in the 2009 Southern California Super Regional Playoffs.

COSTA MESA -- For eight of Orange Coast College's nine innings of play on Saturday, the Pirates were held to just one run on three hits.
 
Fortunately for the Pirates, that "other" inning, the fifth inning, produced 10 runs as Coast topped conference rival Cypress, 11-3, on Saturday at the 2009 Southern California Super Regional Playoffs, played at OCC's Wendell Pickens Field.

COSTA MESA -- Sophomore pitcher/infielder Brett Wallach was named the 2009 Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year, as voted on by the coaches of the OEC on Monday night.
 
In addition to Wallach's POY honor, several Orange Coast College players were selected to this year's All-OEC team, thanks to their co-conference title earned this year.
