SPRING REGISTRATION BEGINS IN NOVEMBER; EARLY SIGN-UPS ADVISED

 Orange Coast College will begin registering new students for the Spring 2010 semester on Nov. 30th. Prospective students should apply online now to get an early registration appointment at www.orangecoastcollege.edu or visit the campus enrollment center in Watson Hall. Registration appointments will be emailed by the college. Currently enrolled students will begin registration Nov 16th. Spring classes start Jan. 30th.

ALL-CAMPUS MEETING GENERATES IDEAS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL
|
|
 An all-campus gathering was held last Friday to brainstorm and gather input regarding whether or not to hold Summer School 2010, and to obtain input as to cost containment ideas for June-July-August 2010.

FACULTY, STAFF ASKED TO COMPLETE PACE SURVEY BY OCTOBER 30

To comply with Accreditation standards, OCC needs your help. Please complete the OCC PACE (Personal Assessment of College Environment) survey emailed to employees last week. The deadline has been extended to Oct. 30th.
Responses pertain to 2008-09 only. It covers WHAT WE DID, rather than what we’re doing. This is for all OCC Faculty and Staff.
We need as many responses as possible. This information will help us be compliant with Accreditation Standards, Policies and Guidelines. It will also play a central role in the college’s strategic planning efforts.

Staff Development announced nominees the 2009-2010 Coast Colleagues of the Year. Voting will be available only on the OCC Portal. Voting begins Monday, Nov. 9th, and ends Monday, Nov. 16th at 3 p.m.
Absentee Ballots will be available in the Staff Development office, division offices, and Watson Hall during the voting period.

 The Gallery Stamperia del Tevere in Rome, Italy, is exhibiting the photographs of OCC Art Professor, Tom Dowling, and English instructor, Lisa Dowling, Oct. 29th through Nov. 26th. “Ritorno a Roma” features selections from the Dowlings’ photographs taken during the couple’s 2006 sabbatacal to Rome. The OCC Library displayed the photographs last year.

RHAPSODY IN TAPS TO PERFORM OC PREMIERE AT OCC FACULTY DANCE CONCERT

 A variety of different dance styles will be featured during Orange Coast College’s 34th Annual Faculty Dance Concert on Friday, Oct. 30th, at 8:00 p.m. in OCC’s Robert B. Moore Theatre, including an Orange County premiere by guest artists Rhapsody in Taps.
The concert, directed by Jeff Mayor, will feature the dancing and choreography of OCC dance faculty members Linda Sohl-Ellison, Monti Ellison, Amelie Hunter, Shana Menaker, Amy Fritzler, Kathy Kahn, Angelika Nemeth and Teresa Avina.

The Orange Coast College Chamber Singers and Chorale will entertain listeners in their first concert of the year on Saturday, Nov. 7th, at 8:00 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. Eliza Rubenstein, OCC’s director of choral and vocal activities, will conduct. Rubenstein also serves as artistic director for the Orange County Women’s Chorus and the Long Beach Chorale & Chamber Orchestra. Tickets are $10.

OCC REPERTORY PRESENTS '10 OR LESS' FESTIVAL

The Orange Coast College Student Repertory Theatre will present a festival of very short plays during its annual “10 or Less Festival” from Nov. 6th through Nov. 15th. Some material involves mature themes.
Performances will be 8:00 p.m. Nov. 6, 7,13 and 14; and Sunday shows at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 8 and 15. HOLIDAY GATHERING TO BLEND CAMPUS APPRECIATION, FUNDRAISING FOR TEXTBOOKS

 Interim President Denise Whittaker is inviting faculty, staff and administrators to join her in a campus-wide Holiday Gathering, Campus Appreciation and Student Textbook Fundraiser on Thursday, Dec. 10th, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. (location TBD).
She hopes to generate $2,500 for textbooks using opportunity drawings for gift baskets and other donated prizes. Whittaker will provide the baskets and the cellophane, and she has asked the campus to pitch in with goodies to fill the baskets.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROGRAM OFFERS OPPORTUNITY DRAWINGS

Get a chance to a HP mini laptop computer or a wine-tasting weekend while you provide some holiday cheer to a struggling single parent who is also trying get an education at OCC. The EOPS/CARE Adopt-A-Family program is sponsoring an Opportunity Drawing to raise money to purchase food, supplies and gifts for needy students and their children. Individuals, organizations and groups on and off campus can also personally Adopt-A-Family for the holidays.

 The Orange Apple Computer Club, a Macintosh user’s group, meets Saturday, November 7, on campus.
At 10 a.m. a South Coast Plaza Apple Store rep will demonstrate iPhoto.
The club, which has been gathering at OCC for more than two decades, meets the first Saturday of each month, from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon in the Chemistry Building, Rm 214. First time visitors are free

 OCC Grad Wins Prestigious Brower Award for Environmental Efforts
Hai Vo, Orange Coast College’s Student of the Year in 2006-07, has been selected as a 2009 Brower Youth Award honoree by the Earth Island Institute for his work as an advocate for sustainable food.
Vo, a 2009 graduate of UC Irvine’s social ecology program, helped organize the “Real Food Challenge” on the UCI campus. The organization is a nationwide, student-based network that advocates use of locally grown and ecologically sound food sources.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers support and resources for persons diagnosed with a mental illness including bi-polar or depression. Bi-polar disorder affects between 1.2% and 2.5% of the U.S. population. NAMI offers links to local support agencies that can assist the individual with bi-polar disorder and their families to cope with this illness. In addition, NAMI has a Veterans Resource Center on their web site with resources for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and homelessness.
