ALL-CAMPUS MEETING FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5

 Orange Coast College’s new president, Dennis Harkins, Ph.D, will launch the spring semester with a campus-wide meeting on Friday, Feb. 5th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Giles Brown Forum.
The meeting will include brief presentations by college groups, and Dr. Harkins will discuss his immediate priorities, philosophy of education and leadership style. Following the meeting, he will be available to mix and meet people.

CAMPUS INVITED TO REVIEW 2nd DRAFT ACCREDITATION REPORT

OCC faculty, administrators and staff are encouraged to examine the second draft of the 2010 Focused Midterm Report. The latest draft will be distributed at academic division meetings on Friday, Feb. 5th, by members of the Accreditation Coordinating Committee led by Melinda Nish, Vice President of Instruction.

KATE MUELLER IN DEMAND FOR SLO TRAINING

|
Orange Coast College is building a reputation as a leader in development of student learning outcomes (SLOs). In fact, the work the college has done is a model for other community colleges that are just beginning to write SLOs for student services.
Kate Mueller, OCC’s Dean of Student Services, is sharing her knowledge of student service specific-SLOs and program review with educators throughout the United States.

ENROLLMENT DIPS SLIGHTLY AS SPRING CLASSES BEGIN
|
|
Orange Coast College began the first day of the Spring 2010 semester with 21,373 students, just 800 fewer students than last spring, but 2,000 more than Spring 2008.
The college offered 1,957 class sections this spring compared to 2,020 last spring. More than 90.8% of students registered online, compared to 90.5% last year, and 73% in 2008.

OCC WINS $179,857 FEDERAL STIMULUS GRANT
|
|
Orange Coast College will receive $179,857 to train 75 new emergency medical technicians as part of $10.7 million in federal economic stimulus money to provide unemployed Californians with skills for entry-level jobs. The college applied for the grant after a survey of employers demonstrated a need for more emergency medical technicians, especially in high demand careers with local ambulance companies. Demand for EMTs is expected to increase as the population ages and medical emergencies become more frequent.

SPEECH TEAM WINS TOP PRIZE AT REGIONALS
|
|
Orange Coast College's Speech, Debate and Theatre Team capped its fall forensic season with a first place win at the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensic Association Fall Championships held at Mt. San Antonio College in December.
OCC scored higher than all 50 schools in attendance, including Pepperdine University, Cal State Long Beach, Mt. San Antonio College and Moorpark College. Competitors represented colleges from California, Arizona and Nevada.

PIRATE DANCERS BRING HOME CHAMPIONSHIP HARDWARE
|
|
The Orange Coast College Cheer and Dance team claimed its 13th national title at the 2010 Universal Dance Association National Championships, held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL, in January.
Competing in the newly-formed Pom category, the Pirates topped a limited field in the Open Division, while Grand View University placed second and Millikin University placed third overall.

24 OCC STUDENTS INVITED TO HONORS CONFERENCE

|
A record 24 Orange Coast College students have been accepted to present at the 2010 Honors Transfer Council of California Conference at UC Irvine on Saturday, March 6th, according to OCC Honors Program Coordinator Denise Cabanel-Bleuer.
“Last year we were thrilled that 13 students presented,” she said. The HTCC Conference, now in its 10th year, is dedicated to showcasing the research of Southern California community college students.

‘HARBOUR CHRONICLES' CELEBRATE SURFBOARD CULTURE

|
More than 40 classic and contemporary surfboards shaped by renowned surfboard designer Rich Harbour will be on display at Orange Coast College’s Doyle Arts Pavilion from Feb.13th through April 9th as part of “Harbour Chronicles–A Life in Surfboard Culture.” The public is invited to an opening reception, including refreshments and entertainment, on Saturday, Feb.13th, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free.
A special opening reception for OCC students, faculty and staff will be Wednesday, Feb. 10th, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

EXPLORE THE SPLENDORS OF GREECE WITH FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY

|
Irini Vallera Rickerson, OCC Professor of Art History, will present “Exploring the Splendors of Greece” on Monday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Lido Isle Clubhouse, 701 Via Lido Soud, Newport Beach.
Rickerson will lead a fascinating journey of archeological sites in Greece. As a native of Athens, she has a wealth of knowledge of her homeland. She will cover such well-known sites as Olympia, where the Olympic games began; Delphi, famous for its oracle; the island of Santorini, with its amazingly well-preserved houses and frescoes; and Pella, with its remarkable pebble mosaics.

DENTAL ASSISTING STUDENTS VOLUNTEER AT UCLA CLINIC

|
Students from Orange Coast College’s Dental Assisting Program will board a bus early on Saturday, Feb. 6th, to volunteer at a pediatric dental clinic in Venice, where they will spend the day serving 300 low-income youngsters as a part of Children’s Dental Health Month.
The 26 students were invited to help out by the Wilson-Jennings-Bloomfield UCLA Venice Dental Center, a community-oriented clinic that provides comprehensive dental care to an ethnically diverse, lower income population from Venice and the surrounding areas.

The Costa Mesa Cultural Arts Committee is accepting submissions for the Artist Showcase XIII, a juried art exhibit for Orange County artists through Monday, Feb. 8th. Dan Beard and Ann Boughey Wed in Hawaii. In January, Dan Beard, OCC professor of food service management and business education, married longtime sweetheart Ann Boughey while they were vacationing in Hawaii. Dan has been teaching at OCC since 1975. Boughey, who retired in 2003, taught emergency medical technology at OCC for 27 years. The couple resides in Irvine.
OCC student Caitlin Beavers has been named to the 2010 U.S. Sailing Development Team, a new youth pipeline team supported by U.S. Sailing’s Olympic Sailing Committee. Beavers, a graduate of Newport Harbor, made the team in the 470 sailing class.The USSDT was created to help young athletes acquire the skills necessary to compete at the Olympic level.

The High Tech Center located in the Special Services building on campus provides adapted computer hardware and software for use by students with disabilities enrolled at OCC. The center has computer software that can read the computer screen to the user, programs that can convert voice into typed text, and other adapted hardware that makes computer technology accessible to students with a variety of disabilities.
