64TH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY SET FOR MAY 23
grads 2011Orange Coast College will confer 2,507 Associate degrees and certificates at the 64th commencement ceremony on Wednesday, May 23rd. More than 7,000 persons are expected to attend the program at 5:30 p.m. at Pacific Amphitheatre, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.

A total 1,283 students will receive Associate in Arts degrees, while 610 will earn Associate in Science degrees. Certificates of Completion will be presented to 614 graduates.

COAST TO HONOR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FOUNDERS AT COMMENCEMENT
Gary Johnson and Evie Taylor-JohnsonGary Johnson and Evie Taylor-Johnson have fond memories of their time as students at OCC in 1957-58.

The Costa Mesa couple met and fell in love on the OCC campus. Gary was the athlete, and Evie the song leader. They continued their connection with OCC as founding members of the Alumni Association, a commitment they have maintained for 26 years. Among the group’s important activities is raising money for scholarships.

CAMPUS INVITED TO MAY 18 CAMPUS FORUM ON ACCREDITATION
OCC students, faculty members, classified staff, managers and administrators are encouraged to participate in a campus forum on the college’s self-study for accreditation on Friday, May 18th. The workshop-style meeting will take place in the Student Center from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

OCC FACULTY MEMBER OF THE YEAR: HELPING OTHERS CHANGED HER LIFE
Robin O’ConnorThe first time Robin O’Connor volunteered with OCC’s Adapted Physical Education (APE) class, it was a selfish act. She needed the extra credit to boost her grade in Ann Harmer’s challenging anatomy class. The experience changed her life.

“I was hooked,” Robin said. She continued to volunteer as she worked toward her fitness specialist certification. It was not too long before Robin realized that “I had found my niche at last.”

PART-TIME FACULTY OF THE YEAR: OCC'S 'MY HAPPY PLACE'
Doug HesseDoug Hesse, OCC’s 2011-2012 Part-Time Faculty Member of the Year, has a special name for Orange Coast College. “I call it my happy place.”

Doug has been sharing his love of reading and writing with Coast students since 2008. He also tutors in the campus Writing Center and describes himself as a “shameless advocate of the humanities.” He enjoys creating a learning environment for his students. “It’s amazing to watch kids grow to do things you can’t teach them.”

OCC STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR: IT TECH HAS DONE IT ALL
Ray Cotter Airplane mechanic, pilot, flight instructor, handyman, computer repairman, Navy photographer, chemical lab technician. You name it, Ray Cotter’s done it.

OCC’s 2011-2012 Staff Member of the Year counts his role as an Information System Technician II as one of his many varied careers. He began working at Coast as a part-time employee in 1998 and moved into a full-time position in 2005.

DISABLED STUDENT OF THE YEAR: OVERCOMES A TRAUMATIC ACCIDENT
Un Joo KangThe prospect of leaving her children without a mother gave Un Joo Kang a reason to live.

Orange Coast College’s Disabled Student of the Year celebrates her 39th birthday next week, but she remembers another day, October 26, 2007, like it was yesterday. Un Joo was loading supplies into a car on the busy highway adjacent to the Laguna Beach College of Art & Design when a vehicle hit her and she was crushed between the two cars.

TREE PLANTING SALUTES STUDENT SUCCESS CHAMPIONS
tree p;lantingThe EOPS Honors Club recognized four champions of student success at a tree-planting ceremony held recently on near the Middle College buildings and the Information Technology Building.

Art professor Irini Rickerson, EOPS coordinator Vida Shajie, student Jamie Edge and OCC Foundation staff assistant René Kinn were honored for their work in classrooms and programs that help OCC students.

CAMPUS TO BID FAREWELL TO RETIRING FACULTY
Orange Coast College’s Annual End-of-the-Year Faculty/Staff Retiree Ceremony will send off 14 faculty members who are retiring at the end of the semester. The reception will take place at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17th, in the Horticulture Gardens.

Retirees include Daniel Adelman, Allied Health; Mary Belcher, Early Childhood Education; Dan Farrell, Allied Health; Jill Golden, Food & Nutrition; Lorraine Henry, Radiologic Technology; Debbie Webb, Librarian; Tom Akers, English; So Van Nguyen, English; Nicolas Winter, English; Dave Gleason, PE & Athletics; Ken Hearlson, Political Science; Ann Wynne, History; Rick Steadry, Photography; and Wayne Tennant, Digital Media Arts & Design.

GEOGRAPHY INSTRUCTOR JOINS FULL-TIME FACULTY
Chris QuinnChris Quinn, who has been teaching geography part-time since 2007, will join OCC’s full-time faculty this fall. He teaches classes in world regional geography, cultural geography, physical geography and geographic information systems (GIS).
 
Chris moved to California after attending Bowling Green State University for two years. He took a class in geography at Cal State Long Beach. “It got me hook, line and sinker,” he admits.

LOW-COST DENTAL SERVICES AVAILABLE TO VOLUNTEERS
Students in the Orange Coast College Dental Assisting Program served nearly 80 patients during the spring semester, and they will continue to help provide low-cast dental exams and cleaning to volunteers this summer, according to Joy Myers, program chair.

Each student is required to recruit four patients for an oral exam that includes digital xrays. Cost is only $35. Professional cleaning is also provided for $49. Dentists and dental hygiene professionals perform the services, and students assist with xrays and coronal polishing.

ASTRONOMY CLUB TREKS TO ALBUQUERQUE FOR SOLAR ECLIPSE
solar eclipseOCC astronomy professor Nick Contopoulos and four members of OCC’s Astronomy Club will travel to Albuquerque, NM, this weekend for a once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of an annular solar eclipse.

Albuquerque will be the perfect place to view the May 20th solar event, Contopoulos said. Annular eclipses only occur in the same place once every 300 years.

OCC GRAD IS COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY VALEDICTORIAN
An OCC graduate is valedictorian of The School of General Studies at Columbia University in New York City. Maxwell Bertolero was honored on May 13th at Columbia University’s Class Day ceremony and reception.

A native of northern California, Maxwell raced motocross before attending Orange Coast College in 2007. He enrolled at Columbia in the fall of 2008. Maxwell majored in philosophy and psychology and earned honors and summa cum laude in both majors.

THEATRE DEPARTMENT TO STAGE ONE-ACT FESTIVAL MAY 17-20
Orange Coast College will showcase the talents of the Repertory Theatre Company’s student directors, actors, designers and playwrights during the annual Spring One-Act Play Festival.

Performances will take place Thursday through Sunday, May 17-20, in the Drama Lab Studio Theatre. Curtain will be 7:30 p.m. each night, with 2:30 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday.

40 DANCERS WILL PERFORM IN COLORFUL SPECTACLE
world dance flierA cast of 40 multicultural dancers will celebrate the colorful movements and rituals from dance around the world on Friday, May 18th, at 7:00 p.m. on stage at Orange Coast College's Robert B. Moore Theatre. Directed by OCC faculty member, Angelika Nemeth, the 60-minute concert includes dance and music selections from Africa, Egypt, Puerto Rico, Hawai'i, Tahiti, Korea and Scotland. Performers include OCC dance and music faculty, guest artists and student dancers from the college's Performing Dance Ensemble Class.

Beth Hansen will direct OCC’s Musical Theatre Workshop on Saturday, May 19th, at 8:00 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. Tickets are $10 at the Bursar’s Office, 714-432-5880, and at www.occtickets.com. Tickets will also be available at the door.

OCC TO HOST “WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL” MAY 30
wild and scenic shot“Wild & Scenic Film Festival” will be presented on Wednesday, May 30th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. Tickets are $10 in advance at the OCC Bursar’s Office and at REI stores in Tustin Market Place and Huntington Beach. Student tickets are $5 at the Bursar’s Office.

“Wild & Scenic” was established by a group of concerned citizens in Nevada City 11 years ago. The festival now includes a world tour that travels to more than 100 venues. The W & S website is a great place to learn more about the film festival and watch a video trailer at www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org

DISTRICT EMPLOYEE WINS AQMD QUARTERLY DRAWING
Kim JeschKim Jesch is the winner of the $200 quarterly drawing offered by OCC’s AQMD Commute Reduction Program. Kim has worked for District Payroll for 20 years and has been a member of OCC’s Commute Reduction Program since it began. Kim commutes 22 miles a day. By carpooling to work, she saves a lot of money on gas and has shortened her commute time by having access to the carpool lane. She currently has no plans for the prize money, but some of her coworkers have suggested that she treat them to lunch.

RE-ENTRY CENTER PLANS SWAP MEET FUNDRAISER
The Re-Entry Center is organizing a fundraiser at the OCC Swap Meet on Saturday, June 9th, from 6:30 am-4:30 pm. Please come and bring your CASH to spend. All proceeds will go towards helping our re-entry students.

If you have items to donate, the Re-Entry Center in Room 433 on the 4th floor of Watson Hall is collecting items such as clothing, books, furniture, small appliances, etc. The Re-Entry Center will be open for collections until 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25th.

COASTLINE RAFFLE TO SUPPORT ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY PROGRAM
Win four park hopper passes to Disneyland and California Adventure, valued at $420, in the 29th Annual Awards Ceremony and Ice Cream Social Fundraiser Raffle for in Coastline College’s Acquired Brain Injury Program. Raffle tickets are $1 each, six for $5, or 25 for $20, and may be purchased through Coastline’s Special Programs Office.

TECH TRAINING INSTITUTE IN JULY AT COASTLINE
Coastline Community College is inviting OCC faculty and staff to attend its 8th annual Summer Technology Training Institute on Thursday and Friday, July 19 & 20, at the college’s Garden Grove Center, 12901 Euclid Street. The event is sponsored by Coastline’s Distance Learning/Technology Committee.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
