Sunday, October 22, 2006

FULLERTON - The Orange Coast College men's and women's cross country teams took part in their final tune-up before next week's Orange Empire Conference Meet -- the Titan Cross Country Invitational -- on Friday at Cal State Fullerton.
On the women's side, only three Pirates -- Elda Hernandez, Kelly Oelschager and Erendira Uriostegui -- competed in the race, giving the other three runners a chance to rest prior to the OEC meet, according to head coach Marco Ochoa.
The three didn't disappoint, finishing in the top-25 against some of the top four-year and club teams in the state.
Hernandez finished the 5K course in 13th place with a time of 18 minutes, 45 seconds. Oelschager (pictured left) put forth a strong effort and placed 24th with a time of 18:57, while Uriostegui was close behind, finishing 25th with a time of 18:59.
On the men's side, the Pirates finished fifth overall with a team score of 139.
Ernesto Castaneda (pictured right) was the Pirates' top runner, finishing the 8K course in 24th place with a time of 27:27.
Teammate Martin Bernard took 29th with a 27:38, while Alfonso Silvas placed 41st with a time of 28:12.
Other OCC times include Travis Foester (28:34), Erik Lopez (28:48), Nathaniel Mouzis (29:04), Eric Pettit (29:15), Nick St. Andre (30:21), Eric Clark (31:21), Sean Connor (33:08) and Alex Drum (33:38).
The Pirates will travel to Irvine Park in Orange for next week's OEC Meet, set to begin at 9 a.m.
