COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team knows how important next week's matches are with Fullerton and Golden West, but the Pirates also know that in a three-way tie for first, EVERY match is important.
So with that in mind, the Pirates made sure that their play was solid on Wednesday night as they swept past Cypress, 30-20, 30-28, 30-22, at the Peterson Gym.
OCC (14-1, 7-1 in the Orange Empire Conference) needs to not look past Santa Ana on Friday before taking on the other tenants of the OEC penthouse -- Fullerton and Golden West -- next week.
Kiwi Winkler led the Pirates with 22 kills, while Jacqi Reed (pictured left) added 12. Defensively, Ashlee Moon led the way with 16 digs, while Winkler chipped in 14 of her own. Setter Chelsea Spadaro dished out 38 assists in the win.
After cruising through Game 1, the Pirates found some rough waters in Game 2, trailing 22-20 before a 6-2 run pushed the Pirates back out in front. With the score tied at 28, a dink by Winkler and an ace by Spadaro sealed the deal for OCC.
In Game 3, the Pirates used a 9-1 run to run away from the Chargers (4-11, 2-6). Led by 11 kills by Sheena Lewis, 25 digs by Karla Andre and 22 assists by Emily Lugo, the Chargers cut the deficit to 24-18 but could not get any closer as the Pirates won for the 40th time in their last 41 matches.
OCC will play at Santa Ana on Friday night, beginning at 7. From there the Pirates play at Fullerton next Wednesday at 6 before hosting rival Golden West on Friday, Nov. 3, beginning at 7.
