COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team dropped their final tune-up before the Orange Empire Conference Tournament -- an 8-7 home loss to San Diego Mesa on Wednesday.
Katie Mahan and Ashley Maher each had two goals and two assists for the Pirates, while Annie Le added two goals and one assist and Natasha Bustard tossed in a goal and an assist. OCC hung tough with the Olympians, trailing 6-4 at the half and 8-5 after three quarters before the Pirates made things very interesting. Just seconds into the fourth quarter, Maher took a nice pass from Le and drilled a shot into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 8-6. Pirate goalkeeper Marilyn Stowell came up with several big saves in the fourth quarter to keep the Olympians off the scoreboard, allowing OCC an opportunity to battle back. Le took a pass from Mahan and fired a laser from the outside and cut the deficit to 8-7, but the Pirates could not find the equalizer as a couple of last-minute shots rang off the San Diego Mesa crossbar. The Orange Empire Conference Tournament begins on Thursday, Nov. 2 at Saddleback and continues on Nov. 4.
