Pirates drop pair at L.A. Southwest tourney
Sunday, December 10, 2006

LOS ANGELES - The Orange Coast College men's basketball team expected some unpleasant "learning experiences" along the way as the young squad prepares for Orange Empire Conference play in a couple of weeks.

Two such experiences took place this past weekend as the Pirates dropped a pair of heartbreaking games at the 2006 L.A. Southwest Intensity Classic.

On Friday, the Pirates saw an eight-point lead in the final minutes evaporate as Moorpark triumphed, 80-76. Shaun Engle led OCC with 28 points, while Cameron Wise added 11.

On Saturday, it was more of the same as another late OCC lead vanished and Mira Costa notched its first win of the season with a 105-104 win in four overtimes.

The shorthanded Pirates (5-6), playing without the services of leading scorer Steven Cornett (shoulder) and Tyler Hentzen (ankle), still jumped out to a 42-26 lead after the first half of play, only to see Mira Costa (1-11) storm back to even the game after regulation, 70-70.

OCC had plenty of opportunities to win the game, but the shots simply didn't fall late. Finally, in the fourth overtime, Mira Costa jumped out to a 10-point advantage, then held off a furious Pirate rally.

Engle again led the way with 23 points, while Cameron Wise added 20 points and 21 rebounds. Diego Delgado also chipped in 20 points for OCC.

The Pirates will next travel to the Glendale Tournament, where they open things with the College of the Canyons on Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m. at Glendale College.
