Canyons top Pirates, advance to tourney title game
Wednesday, December 20, 2006

COSTA MESA - It's not too difficult to figure out who the top players are for the College of the Canyons' women's basketball team. What IS difficult, however, is trying to stop them.

Led by the threesome of Leslie Ortiz, Facion Edwards and Melissa Tachias, the Cougars snapped Orange Coast's nine-game winning streak with a 79-65 win on Tuesday, advancing to the title game of the Coast Christmas Classic.

Ortiz, the speedy, elusive Cougar point guard, paced with 24 points and 12 assists -- most of those helpers going to Edwards, who scored 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting. While they were scoring, Tachias was doing the dirty work, grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds to go with her nine points.

OCC's Courtney Ford led all scorers with 28 points and Devin Hundley added 12, but it was an off-night for the rest of the Pirates (11-3), who shot just 20.5 percent (8-of-39) collectively.

The Pirates trailed by five at the half and saw that deficit reach as high as 13 before a second-half run cut the margin down to seven, forcing a Cougar timeout.

But that would be as close as the hosts would get as the Cougars hit 50 percent from the field in the second half (14-of-28) and was 3-of-4 from 3-point range.

OCC will take on Southwestern for third place, beginning at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. COC will go up against Cerritos for the tourney championship at 6 p.m.

San Diego Mesa will take on Saddleback in the consolation championship, beginning at 2 p.m.

Other scores from Tuesday:
Cerritos 51, Southwestern 43
Saddleback 59, Cuesta 31
San Diego Mesa 56, El Camino 49
