COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College women's basketball team had no ill effects from the Christmas break, breezing past Allan Hancock College 95-39 in Day 1 of the Orange Coast New Year's Crossover on Friday night.
The Pirates (13-3), ranked third in Southern California and fifth in the state, enlarged their state-best scoring average to 82.8 points per game following Friday's scoring outburst.
Courtney Ford led the Pirates with 17 points in another balanced scoring effort by the hosts. Robin Smith added 16 points, while Erin Barney tossed in 10 points. Smith and Rachael Maulit paced the offense with six assists each, while Brittany Taylor controlled the glass with a team-high 10 rebounds.
OCC led from start to finish as the Bulldogs (8-10) saw their offensive production take a major hit without the services of leading scorer Brittoni DeWitt (23.4 points per game, fifth-best in the state).
Trailing 46-20 at the half, AHC watched the Pirates find success from 3-point land, hitting 8 of 18 treys in the final 20 minutes of action.
The Pirates' defense, led by Maulit's five steals, forced 34 Bulldog turnovers, while holding Allan Hancock's shooting to just 31.3 percent for the night (15-of-48).
OCC will host Rio Hondo on Saturday night to wrap up the crossover, beginning at 7 p.m.
In the earlier game, Irvine Valley topped Rio Hondo 67-51. Danyelle Swenson and Emily Luckeroth each had 14 points for the Lasers, while Kayla Acromite added 13 points and 12 rebounds and Nicole Tait tossed in 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Ruby Catani led Rio Hondo with 17 points.
