COSTA MESA - One thing's for certain -- the Orange Coast College women's basketball team isn't afraid to pull the trigger on offense.
The Pirates took 95 shots -- making 51 (including 19 3-pointers) en route to a 127-59 win over Rio Hondo at the Orange Coast New Year's Crossover on Saturday night.
The 127 points is an all-time best for the women's basketball program, topping the previous mark of 116, set on Dec. 12, 1992 against Grossmont. That mark also equals the school's all-time mark for basketball, matching the men's 127 scored against El Camino in the 1969-70 season.
Devin Hundley scored 24 points (6-of-8 from 3-point range), Courtney Ford added 21 points and Robin Smith contributed 20 off the bench for the Pirates (14-3). Katie Kissee added 18 points on six 3-pointers, while Brittany Taylor and Erin Barney each added 12 and combined for 20 rebounds, eight assists and eight steals. Point guard Rachael Maulit paced the offense with 10 assists.
OCC finished with 38 assists for the night as the ball hardly touched the floor.
Ruby Catani, who led all scorers with 26 points including six 3s, was the lone bright spot for the Roadrunners (1-12).
OCC held a double-digit lead just four minutes into the game and never looked back as the Pirates' defense forced 33 turnovers in the game. Twenty-three of those 33 turnovers came in the first half as Coast scored early and often, carrying a 68-20 lead into the locker room.
From there, it was simply a matter of when, not if, the scoring record was going to fall. Finally, with 5:03 left, a Kissee trey broke the mark. OCC shot 53.7 percent for the game and 50 percent (19-of-38) from downtown.
OCC will kick off Orange Empire Conference play on Wednesday at home against Golden West, beginning at 7 p.m.
