COSTA MESA - It wasn't the type of game that a coach would cram their highlight reel with, but for the Orange Coast College men's basketball team, every win is a thing of beauty.
Shaun Engle scored 24 points, while Steve Cornett added 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Pirates past visiting Cypress 72-66 in Coast's Orange Empire Conference opener on Friday night at the Peterson Gymnasium.
The inside-outside duo combined to score 35 of their 47 points in the second half as the Pirates (10-9, 1-0 in OEC) managed to hold off a relentless Chargers squad. Cypress' trio of Eric Butler, Khalif Boyd and Rodrigo Carbajal each scored 12 points to lead their offense.
Courtesy of 20 Cypress (6-14, 0-2) turnovers, the Pirates jumped out to a 32-27 halftime lead thanks to their 94-foot harrassing defensive pressure. Shaun Campbell's five steals led the way for OCC.
The Chargers regrouped in the locker room and took an early lead in the second half before a pair of offensive spurts -- led by Engle's 3-point shooting and Cornett's post play -- helped spark the Pirates.
OCC will return to conference action on Wednesday at Fullerton, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
