Thornton notches 400th win as Pirates roll past Dons
Wednesday, January 17, 2007

COSTA MESA - The last time Orange Coast College head coach Mike Thornton notched a milestone win (No. 300 in 2002-03), his team went on to win the state title.

Just food for thought.

Thornton (pictured left) earned his 400th career win at Coast as the Pirates topped Santa Ana 70-60 on Wednesday night at the Peterson Gym.

Courtney Ford led the first-place Pirates (19-3, 5-0 in the Orange Empire Conference) with 20 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and six steals, while Robin Smith came off the bench to score 19 points, 17 in the second half.

It was a battle against two of the top teams in Southern California as the third-ranked Pirates held a 36-27 first-half lead on the seventh-ranked Dons (14-7, 3-2) as both teams struggled to find their offensive groove.

Sophomore point guard Devin Hundley (pictured left) started the first half hot, scoring 11 quick points before Ford added to the Pirates' scoring with 11 points of her own.

In the second half, it was the "Robin Smith Show" as the sophomore guard (pictured right) went a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers along the way.

Aubrey Duran had 23 points and eight rebounds to lead the Dons. Diane Redfox chipped in 10 points.

Santa Ana improved its shooting in the second half, hitting 14 of 32 shots, but the Pirates' defense prevented any type of momentum-changing scoring outbursts. Meanwhile Smith's hot shooting helped minimize any success the Dons found in the second half.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Saddleback, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
