RIVERSIDE - A tough first half on both sides of the court was too much to overcome as the Orange Coast College men's basketball team dropped its third straight, 70-59, at Riverside on Wednesday in Orange Empire Conference action. The Pirates shot an ice-cold 19 percent from the floor in the first half (5-of-26) and 13.3 percent from 3-point land (2-of-15). Riverside, the state's fifth-ranked team (22-2 overall, 5-1 in OEC) took advantage of the cold offensive start and turned up the heat defensively, forcing 14 Pirate turnovers in the first half en route to a 32-19 halftime lead. With some defensive intensity of their own, the Pirates (12-12, 3-3) kept fighting and used some second-half success to get to within eight, 60-52, with just over 2 minutes remaining, led by the strong play of Steven Cornett (pictured right). The sophomore post player had a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucs, but no other OCC player was able to reach double figures. Riverside was led by Emmanuel Jones, who scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Rodney Yearby and Jerrell Smith each had 15 points and combined for 20 rebounds as the Tigers out-boarded the Pirates 49-33. OCC will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Cypress, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
