HUNTINGTON BEACH - The players should not be surprised if head coach Mike Thornton goes over a ton of free-throw drills over the next few days, simply because they weren't able to work on that facet of the game on Friday night against Golden West.
Held to an unheard-of 0-for-0 from the free-throw line, the Pirates scored their 102 points the old-fashioned way en route to a 102-33 demolition of the Rustlers to maintain their perfect record in the Orange Empire Conference.
"That's got to be some kind of record, doesn't it?" OCC head coach Mike Thornton asked. "In all my years of coaching, I've never seen anything like that."
Robin Smith (pictured left) led the Pirates (22-3, 8-0 in the OEC) with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including six 3-pointers. Courtney Ford added 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Brittany Taylor (14 points) and Katie Kissee (13 points) also reached double-figures. Pacing the offense was point guard Rachael Maulit, who dished out a season-high 11 assists.
OCC started the game with its suffocating full-court press and the shorthanded Rustlers (2-20, 0-8) were outmatched from the opening whistle, falling behind 19-0 in the game's first three minutes.
That lead grew to 35-2, then later, 52-4 and the rout was on.
The Pirates shot an incredible 27-of-43 from the field (62.8 percent) and took a 63-12 lead at the half.
Siutiti Takai led the Rustlers with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
OCC will return to action on Wednesday at Cypress before returning home to host second-place Fullerton on Friday. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
