Pirates snap losing streak with win over Cypress
Thursday, February 01, 2007

CYPRESS - The Orange Coast College men's basketball team jumped out early, then held on for dear life as a late Cypress charge came up short in Wednesday's 70-64 conference win.

OCC (13-12, 4-3 in the Orange Empire Conference) jumped out to a 20-7 lead early in the first half as the Pirates' defense helped create the scoring surge.

The lead grew to 17 before Cypress (6-20, 0-8) regrouped and used a 9-3 run to trail by 11 at the break, 34-23.

Shaun Engle led the Pirates with 22 points, while Steve Cornett (pictured left) added 13 to go along with eight rebounds. Miguel Gonzalez (pictured right) was solid on both ends of the floor, scoring 11 points, while grabbing six steals.

In the second half, the Chargers came out strong and cut their deficit down to two before a Pirate outburst pushed their lead back up to 12 with 7:16 left.

In a game of runs, the Chargers answered right back and got as close as a single point with 1:14 left, but the Pirates, who hit 15-of-21 from the free-throw line in the second half, would not give up the lead. OCC went 27-of-35 from the charity stripe for the game.

Clinton Williams and Jeff Comminey each had 13 points to lead Cypress.

OCC will return to action on Friday at home against Fullerton, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
