Icy second half does in Pirate men, 89-75
Friday, February 02, 2007

COSTA MESA - Fifty percent from the field, 46 percent from 3-point land, 75 percent from the free-throw line. As good as those first-half numbers were for the Orange Coast College men's basketball team, the second half's numbers didn't quite carry over to that high a level on Friday night against Fullerton.

Leading by 10 at the half, the Pirates came out ice-cold in the second half, shooting 9-of-35 from the field as the Hornets rallied to win 89-75 in Orange Empire Conference action at the Peterson Gym.

Hitting just 5-of-18 from 3-point range and 4-of-8 from the free-throw line, the Pirates (13-13, 4-4 in the OEC) watched the Hornets (13-15, 4-5) open the second half with a 20-3 run over the first 7 minutes of the second half and never looked back.

Six-foot-7 forward Rodrick Johnson led the Hornets with 34 points (22 in the second half) and 11 rebounds. Brett Spencer added 16 points and seven rebounds, Bryan LeDuc tossed in 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Ray Magee added 13 points and six boards.

The Hornets outscored the Pirates 51-27 in the second half, hitting 51 percent of their shots from the field and outscoring OCC from the free-throw line, 14-4.

Josh Poitevin (pictured left) led the Pirates with 22 points, while Miguel Gonzalez added 17 points. The duo combined to hit 13-of-22 from the field (59 percent), while the rest of the team hit just 12-of-45 (26.7 percent).

OCC will return to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday night against Irvine Valley, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
