COSTA MESA - Trailing 4-0, the OCC softball team pushed visiting Chaffey to extra innings with a four-run rally, but fell short in eight innings, 6-4, on Monday in nonconference action.
Held to just four hits through six innings, the Pirates (1-9) came to life in the bottom of the seventh. Janae Rivera led things off with a single to left and after a strikeout, Ashley Coia, Allison Wyman followed with singles and Chelsea Evers ripped a triple to left to cut the deficit to 4-3. From there, Evers scored on an RBI grounder by Felicia Leal to tie the game at 4.
But it wasn't enough as the Panthers (6-5) answered OCC's seventh as two hits, a walk and a Pirate error turned into a pair of eighth-inning runs.
Rivera, Wyman and Coia each had two hits and a run scored for OCC.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday when they open the Orange Empire Conference schedule at home against Santiago Canyon, beginning at 3 p.m.
