Swimming: Pirate men and women prevail over Golden West

COSTA MESA - With several strong performances, the Orange Coast College men's and women's swim teams made a big splash in their own pool by topping Golden West on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference dual meet.
On the men's side, the Pirates prevailed 168-66, while the women won, 186-84 over the Rustlers.
Several Pirates lapped the field en route to victory, including Jimmy Cule in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9 minutes, 56:56 seconds), Joe Krone in the 200 free (1:48.11), Greg Hulse in the 50 free (22.11) and 100 free (48.91), Damien Bernard in the 200 individual medley (2:00.74), Josh Knight in the 200 butterfly (2:09.64), Jimmy Cule in the 500 free (4:49.36) and Elden Carpenter in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.48).
In the 400 medley relay, the foursome of Adam Jones, Bernard, Knight and Hulse prevailed with a time of 3:44.09.
On the women's side, Lauren Smith was a triple-winner individually, winning the 100 backstroke (1:06.00), 50 butterfly (28.87) and the 100 fly (1:04.69).
Joining Smith in the triple-win category was Ashlee Gray, who won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.52), the 100 IM (1:10.40) and the 50 breaststroke (33.04).
Hailey Barker won two races -- the 200 IM (2:24.92) and the 500 free (5:37.03), while Natasha Bustard (50 back, 31.06) and Tiffany Libman (50 free, 25.98) each posted single-race victories.
In the relays, the quartet of Bustard, Gray, Smith and Libman won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:58.12. In the 200 free relay, Barker, Tuesday Schellinger, Kelly O'Brien and Maile Johnson posted a winning time of 1:48.75.
The Pirates will compete next at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational on March 1-3.
