CERRITOS - Hester Chang earned a spot on the Orange Coast College record board this past weekend as she set a new school record in the hammer throw at the California Relays, held at Cerritos College.
Chang (pictured left) recorded a throw of 143 feet, 8 inches, topping the school's previous-best mark of 134-5, set by Aabria Lipscomb last year.
I'm extremely happy I could do that, but I know I can still do better," Chang said. "That same meet, I threw one 160-feet, but my heel hit just outside the circle, so it didn't count."
With that throw, Chang is now fifth in the state, fourth in Southern California and first in the Orange Empire Conference.
There were several solid performances for the Pirates this past weekend, including Erendira Uriostegui, who finished fourth in the 800 (2 minutes, 20.91 seconds) and fifth in the 1,500 (4:54.65). Teammates Kristen Glen (6th, 5:02.27) and Melinda Rackliffe (eighth, 5:05.98) helped place three in the top-10 for the Pirates.
Brittany Ickes used a solid throw in the javelin to finish third with a mark of 112-3.
On the men's side, Brandon Babiracki finished second in the 800 with a time of 1:53.22.
Third-place finishes went to Erik Lopez in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:34.36), Andres Rossini in the discus (154-3) and Scott Burbach in the javelin (185-3).
Top-five performances for OCC went to Keneti Faagata in the discus (4th, 153-9), Chris Pfeifer in the 400 hurdles (5th, 57.6) and Justin Parga in the 400 (5th, 50.5).
OCC will host Golden West on Friday in an OEC dual meet, beginning at 2 p.m.
