RIVERSIDE - The Orange Coast College women's tennis team is following the same pattern as the women's cross country and they are hoping for the same final results - a state championship.
What the Pirates lack in depth, they make up with in talent and on Tuesday, they topped Riverside 5-4 to win the Orange Empire Conference title.
WIth the win, OCC improves to a perfect 11-0 overall, 8-0 in conference. Riverside drops to 12-3, 5-3.
Singles wins came from Evelyn Wallace (6-0, 6-0), Heather Morton (6-3, 6-2) and Mahtab Davatolhagh (6-4, 6-2), but perhaps the win of the day came from K.D. Doran, who overcame an opening-set loss to rally past Vicki Andrade, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
"She (Doran) fell behind early and I thought that we weren't going to win that one, but she showed tremendous heart to come back and win," OCC coach Janice Maran said. "I was so proud of her. It was really a nice win."
In doubles, the team of Jaleh Mazaheri and Morton doubled up the Tigers' team of Anabel Sanchez and Kristen Aja, 8-4 for OCC.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Cypress, beginning at 2 p.m.
