MISSION VIEJO - It was about as good a opening day of competition the Orange Coast College men's and women's swim teams could ask for at the Orange Empire Conference Meet, held at Saddleback College.
Through 12 events, the Pirate men posted 277 team points, well ahead of second-place Grossmont's 143 points. Riverside (124 points) resides in third place after the first day.
On the women's side, OCC leads things with 196 points, followed by Grossmont (157) and Riverside (136).
Starting things off on the right foot were the Pirates' 200-yard freestyle relay teams. Both the men (1 minute, 24.38 seconds) and women (1:41.58) finished first in each of their races.
The relay teams continued to impress later in the meet as the OCC women (4:11.5) and men (3:32.55) each finished first in the 400 medley relays.
There were not one, but two 1-2-3 finishes for the Pirate men. In the 200 individual medley, the trio of Damien Bernard (1:55.5), Joe Krone (1:57.29) and Zach Duehring (1:59.59) swept the medals, while in the 3-meter diving was Justin Taylor (438.85 points), Cody Ellis (404.35) and Chris Malloy (362.35) who finished 1-2-3.
Other top-three finishes for the Pirates include Jummy Cule in the 500 freestyle (3rd, 4:41.74), Ashlee Gray in the 100 IM (2nd, 1:05.59), Greg Hulse in the 50 free (3rd, 21.66) and Nikki Burrelli in 1-meter diving (2nd, 334.55).
Day 2 of the OEC meet will take place on Friday at Saddleback College.
