Swimming: OCC men, women capture conference championships!

MISSION VIEJO - Mission accomplished for the Orange Coast College men's and women's swim teams as they each took home team conference titles at the Orange Empire Conference Swim Championships, held at Saddleback College.
The Pirate men finished the competition with 803.5 points, completely dominating the competition. Grossmont was second with 508 points, while Palomar (432) took third.
Justin Taylor, this year's OEC Diver of the Year, made it a clean sweep for himself by winning the 1-meter diving competition with 446.7 points. He placed first in the 3-meter event on Thursday. Teammates Chris Malloy (347.55) and Cody Ellis (317.5) finished second and third, respectively, for the Pirates.
Three other Pirate men took home first-place marks on Day 2 of the event on Friday, including Damien Bernard in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.52 seconds), Adam Jones in the 100 backstroke (54.3) and Elden Carpenter in the 400 individual medley (4:15.81).
It was more of the same on Saturday as Carpenter took home the gold in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.99. Josh Knight (1:53.44) and Damien Bernard (1:55.04) finished 1-2 in the 200 butterfly, Jimmy Cule won the 1,650 freestyle (16:22.91), Greg Hulse placed first in the 100 free (46.05) and the men's 200 medley relay hit the wall first with a time of 1:34.64.
Men's swim coach Anthony Iacopetti was named the OEC Men's Swim Coach of the Year.
On the women's side, the Pirates finished the meet with a winning team score of 436.5. Grossmont placed second with 413.5, while Riverside (326) finished third.
The Pirate women's 200 medley relay was the highlight of Day 2, winning the event with a time of 1:54.26. The 400 freestyle relay placed first on Saturday with a winning time of 3:44.68.
