SANTA ANA - The Orange Coast College men's track and field team finished second, while the Pirate women took third at the Orange Empire Conference Championships at Santa Ana College last weekend.
A pair of Pirates picked up a pair of wins. On the men's side, distance runner Brandon Babiracki earned a couple of OEC titles in the 1,500 meters (4 minutes, 0.18 seconds) and the 800 (1:55.18), while on the women's side, hurdler Brenda Finney picked up wins in the 100 hurdles (15.73) and 400 hurdles (1:04.51). Finney (pictured left) was particularly busy at the meet as she also finished second in the women's heptathlon with 3,815 points and was a part of two top-three relay teams -- the 400 (3rd, 52.05) and the 1,600 (2nd, 4:08.84). She also finished sixth in the high jump (4 feet, 7 3/4 inches) and seventh in the long jump (15-6 1/2) for good measure. Kyle Peterson showed his all-around athletic ability by winning the decathlon with 5,956 points. Erendira Uriostegui took the top spot in the women's 800 (2:19.42) and placed second in the 1,500 with a time of 4:48.72.
Sophomore Scott Burbach outthrew the field in the javelin with a winning mark of 193-02, the only competitor to clear 190 feet.
Andres Rossini (pictured right) left the competition in the dust in the discus with a winning throw of 154-11. Teammate Keneti Faagata was runner-up with a throw of 139-6.
Faagata managed to pick up some gold of his own, however, winning the shot put with a mark of 49-0.
A pair of pole vaulters each took home the top prize. For the women, Jade Leblanc cleared 10-6 to win, while for the men, it was Kyle Peterson and his winning jump of 14-6.
Javelin standout Brittany Ickes continued her impressive season, winning the OEC title with a throw of 113-1.
Other top-three finishes from the OEC meet include Melinda Rackliffe in the 3,000 steeplechase (3rd, 12:43.81), Martin Bernard in the 3,000 steeplechase (3rd, 10:05.42), Preston Switzer in the 10,000 (35:13.67), the men's 400 relay (2nd, 42.79), Jesse Ramirez in the 1,500 (3rd, 4:03.65), Justin Parga in the 400 (2nd, 48.78), Josh Strickland in the 100 (10.99), the men's 1,600 relay (2nd, 3:21.11) and George Prior in the javelin (3rd, 178-11).
