VICTOR VALLEY - Orange Coast College's Jaleh Mazaheri made the long trip worth her while as she topped the field and won the Southern California Women's Tennis Regional Championships last weekend at Victor Valley College. Mazaheri (pictured left), seeded No. 2 in the tournament took on a familar face in the finals, upsetting top-seeded El Camino's Katherine Chavez, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 to win the tournament. Just two weeks ago the two met in the semifinals of the Ojai Valley Tournament, a match won by Chavez, 7-6 (5), 6-0. Following a pair of straight-set wins to open the tournament, Mazaheri outlasted Palomar's Maria Nissinoff, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, then defeated No. 5 seed Erina Hung of Saddleback, 6-1, 7-6 (2). It wasn't Mazaheri's only trip to the championships at Victor Valley. In doubles, she teamed up with Heather Morton and gave the Saddleback duo of Hung and Kathy Dennis all they could handle before losing, 6-4, 6-4. It was the second straight Pirate pair that Hung and Dennis had to beat to win the regional title. In the semifinals, they topped Evelyn Wallace and K.D. Doran 6-1, 6-0. The State Women's Tennis Tournament will take place, beginning on Thursday at UC Santa Cruz.
