COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College women's tennis team saw its return trip to the State Championships denied by Saddleback, 5-4, at the Southern California Dual Tennis Championships on Tuesday at OCC.
The loss ends the Pirates' season at 14-2 and also eliminates Coast from a third straight opportunity at a state championship.
On a team with just six players, there was no margin for injuries and unfortunately for the Pirates, a costly foot injury to Mahtab Davatolhagh came at an inopportune time.
The injury forced the Pirates to default a singles and doubles match, giving the Gauchos (15-2) the winning margin.
Evelyn Wallace and K.D. Doran each won their singles matches, then teamed up to prevail in doubles, giving OCC three of its four wins.
Wallace made quick work of Nisa Meineke, 6-1, 6-0, while Doran needed to overcome a first-set loss to rally past Andrea Warren, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. As a team, Wallace and Doran topped Warren and Meineke, 7-5, 6-4.
The singles match of the day was by No. 1 Jaleh Mazaheri, who overcame the warm temperatures, the length of the match (nearly three hours) and the relentless play of Saddleback standout Erina Hung to win her final singles match of her OCC career, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
