Track and Field: Several Pirates qualify for SoCal finals

SAN DIEGO - With the Southern California Regional Track and Field Finals set to take place this weekend at UC San Diego, expect to see plenty of Orange Coast College's orange and blue streaking around the track complex.
With several solid performances at last weekend's preliminaries, over 20 events will have OCC representatives competing.
Included in the mix is standout distance runner Brandon Babiracki, who won the 1,500 prelim with a time of 3 minutes, 55.68 seconds. Teammate Jesse Ramirez (4:04.52) also qualified for this weekend's race as well as the 800 (1:56.22).
Babiracki will also compete in the 800 after qualifying with a time of 1:54.39.
Another first-place prelim came from Andres Rossini, who won the discus with a throw of 163 feet, six inches.
Other OCC standouts who have qualified for the SoCal Regional Finals include Martin Bernard (3,000 steeplechase and 5,000), Kyle Peterson (pole vault), Keneti Faagata (shot put and discus), Scott Burbach (javelin), George Prior (javelin), the men's 400 relay (Josh Strickland, Brian Bennett, Evan Campbell and Chris Pfeifer), the men's 1,600 relay (Bennett, Pfeifer, Babiracki and Justin Parga), Erendira Uriostegui (800, 1,500), Kristin Glen (1,500, 5,000), Melinda Rackliffe (3,000 steeplechase), Brenda Finney (400 hurdles), Jade Leblanc (pole vault), Brittany Ickes (javelin) and the women's 1,600 relay (Ashley Rodriguez, Finney, Madison Empting and Uriostegui).
The top-four in lane races, the top-six in lap races and the top-six in field events from this weekend's finals will advance to the State Meet, which will take place at the College of San Mateo on May 18-19.
