APTOS - This year, Jaleh Mazaheri would not be denied.
After losing in the state semifinals in singles a year ago, the OCC sophomore standout made all the way to the title match, where she topped El Camino's Katherine Chavez 6-2, 6-2 to win the state championship last weekend at the Commission on Athletics State Tennis Championships, held at Cabrillo College. "Jaleh was outstanding this past weekend and it came at the perfect time for her," OCC head coach Janice Maran said. "For all of her hard work she's put in over the past two years, I couldn't be any prouder of her." Mazaheri began her trip to the state championship on Friday, when she picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alex Siemens of Sierra. Later that day, she made quick work of Chabot's Megan Kummer, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the semifinals. On Saturday, Mazaheri faced a familiar foe in Saddleback's Erina Hung in the semifinals, an opponent she's faced five times this season. Mazaheri made it a perfect 5-for-5 as she topped Hung 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the finals. On the doubles side, Mazaheri and Heather Morton advanced to the semifinals before falling to Sierra's Siemens and Jessica Harris, 6-3, 6-0. Earlier in the tournament, OCC's duo topped Anna Klemeroa and Danielle Richardson of Cabrillo, 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round and Anna Ottman Ashley Ottman of Santa Barbara 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. K.D. Moran and Evelyn Wallace picked up a first-round win over Sacramento's Amanda Dewey and Marisol Prieto-valley (6-3, 7-6), but lost in the quarterfinals to Sierra's Anneke Boschma and Yoko Kuwashima (6-2, 6-3). On the men's side, Jon Kroopf picked up a first-round won by sweeping past Chabot's Yuki Asari 6-1, 6-1, but fell in the quarterfinals to Grossmont's Kyle Erickson, 7-5, 6-1. In doubles, Pat Lam and Charlie Nguyen qualified for the State Tournament, but lost in the opening round to Chabot's Nick Jakosjin and Jason Huk, 6-2, 6-2.
