CERRITOS -- The schedule-makers didn't do the Orange Coast College women's soccer team any favors at the start of this season as the Pirates fell to host Cerritos 4-1 on Tuesday in nonconference action.
The Pirates (0-2), who opened the season with a 3-0 road loss Long Beach City (ranked No. 5 in the state), will have three straight tough nonconference matchups under their belts before opening Orange Empire Conference play on the road against Saddleback. OCC's first home contest will be Sept. 14 against Fullerton (3 p.m.).
Tuesday's contest started strong for the Pirates as Shannon Arnold took advantage of a misplayed save by Cerritos goalkeeper Chantal Cervero and fired a shot into the empty net for a 1-0 lead.
But Cerritos (4-0-1), one of the highest-scoring teams in Southern California, came right back with two first-half goals and added another pair in the second half, outshooting the Pirates 28-9 along the way.
OCC goalkeeper Katie Johnson was peppered with shots all afternoon, but managed to pick up 15 saves along the way.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday at Mt. San Antonio, beginning at 3 p.m.
