Cross Country: Pirates fare well at OEC Preview Meet

FULLERTON -- If Friday's Orange Empire Conference Cross Country Preview Meet was any indication of the upcoming 2007 season, look for a lot of orange and blue uniforms near the head of the pack.
With five OCC runners in the top-six, the Pirate women dominated their race with a team score of 19 points. Leading the way for the Pirates was Crystal Reed, who dominated the 3.076-mile race with a time of 16 minutes, 51.1 seconds. Santiago Canyon's Alicia Ayala finished second at 18:20.5, nearly a minute and a half behind Reed.
From there, it was a plethora of Pirates as Cassie Mitchell (18:25.0), Ariana Espinoza (19:00.8), Tiffany Hanna (19:04.7) and Senayt Asrat (19:06.3) claimed the next four slots in the standings.
Other solid times for the Pirates include Jillian Lopez (11th, 19:22.5), Elena Lopez (13th, 19:53.0), Joanna Abarca (15th, 19:54.3), Tali Sproat (16th, 20:12.26), Claire Fleming (18th, 20:30.0), Natalie Rodriguez (19th, 20:33.2), Heather Cannioto (20th, 20:34.6), Adalid Camanos (27th, 21:06.6), Alyssa Carchia (28th, 21:45.4) and Jessica Ramseier (31st, 22:00.1).
On the men's side, the Pirates finished third overall with 55 points, behind Santa Ana (44) and Riverside (53).
Sophomore standout Brandon Babiracki (pictured right), last year's state champion in the 1,500 meters, claimed first place on the four-mile course with a winning time of 20:33.4, holding off Santa Ana's Jersain Torres (also pictured right). Teammate Jorge Torres placed third with a time of 21:21.6, while Cooper Meacham finished 11th at 21:45.1.
Other top OCC times include Preston Switzer (19th, 22:18.4), Sean Connor (23rd, 22:57.8), Nathaniel Mouzis (24th, 22:58.2), James Ko (25th, 23:04.6), Chris Ponce (28th, 23:24.3), Miguel Morales (38th, 24:28.0) and Luis Munoz (39th, 24:52.3).
OCC returns to action on Saturday at the Fresno Invitational at Woodward Park, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
