Women's Volleyball: Pirates cruise past Cerritos
Wednesday, September 19, 2007

COSTA MESA - After last weekend's Santa Ana Tournament title, the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team continued its winning ways with a three-game nonconference sweep over visiting Cerritos, 30-15, 30-21, 30-26.

Jacqi Reed and Rebecca Lowe each had 10 kills for the host Pirates (4-1), while setter Emily Lyon paced the offense with 30 assists.

For the Falcons (0-6), Samantha Montiel led the way with six kills, while Brittany Hayes added four and setter Julie Reich posted 20 assists.

OCC used its size to its advantage in Game 1 as Jenna Harp's two early blocks helped set the tone for a 12-6 lead. Cerritos hung around and trailed by five (19-14) before OCC riped off 11 of the next 12 points to close the game out.

It was more of the same in Game 2 as the Pirates used a 17-4 run early on to grab control of a 22-9 advantage. Cerritos took advantage of some sloppy play by the Pirates to go on a 12-7 run before OCC finally closed the game out.

That late Game-2 run gave the Falcons some momentum and they rolled with it early in Game 3, jumping out to a 15-9 advantage. Several hitting and serving miscues by Coast, plus some solid returns by Teresa Orejel and Montiel helped push Cerritos out in front.

But the two-time state champion Pirates regrouped and doubled up on the Falcons 14-7 to take a 23-22 lead.

Cerritos regained the lead at 24-23 before Coast pulled away with five straight points to take the lead for good. Dierdre Fiapai's fourth kill of the night ended the match and gave the Pirates the win.

OCC returns to action on Friday at San Diego City, beginning at 5 p.m.
