Saturday, September 22, 2007

COSTA MESA - It was a sea of Orange and Blue crossing the finish line early as the Orange Coast College women’s cross country team left its competition all wet during Saturday’s Orange Coast Cross Country Classic at Fairview Park.

Under threatening skies, the six-time defending state champions tore apart the muddy terrain and posted five top-eight finishes en route to a team score of 22. Cerritos finished second overall with 72 points, equaling Southwestern’s score of 72.

OCC freshman standout Crystal Reed was first to complete the 5K course, crossing the finish line with a time of 19 minutes, 11.5 seconds, nearly a full minute ahead of runner-up teammate Cassie Mitchell (20:10.3).

In fourth place, Pirate runner Tiffany Hannah came in with a time of 20:35.3, while fellow Coasters Ariana Espinoza (20:52.2) and Senayt Asrat (20:52.9) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Other OCC times include Jillian Lopez (14th, 21:30.5), Claire Fleming (22nd, 22:01.6), Joanna Abarca (26th, 22:06.4), Elena Lopez (27th, 22:16.7), Heather Cannioto (32nd, 22:36.8), Natalie Rodriguez (23:03.6), Adalid Camanos (39th, 23:32.4), Alyssa Carchia (40th, 23:33.2) and Jessica Ramseier (50th, 24:46.4).

On the men’s side, OCC used four top-20 point-earners to place third overall with 76 points, behind San Bernardino Valley (25 points) and Antelope Valley (69).

SBVCC’s Carlos Perez was first to finish the four-mile course with a winning time of 20:07.9, while Pirate standout Brandon Babiracki took second with a time of 20:38.8.

With eight runners in the top-16, San Bernardino Valley, last year’s state champions, showed tremendous depth and talent on the muddy Fairview Park course.

Jorge Torres finished 12th with a time of 21:34.1, while Preston Switzer (18th, 21:49.4), Cooper Meacham (21st, 22:08.0) and Sean Connor (26th, 22:28.3) round out OCC’s top five runners.

Other Coast times include James Ko (28th, 22:44.2), Chris Ponce (29th, 22:46.2), Nate Mouzis (37th, 23:07.2), Luis Munoz (44th, 24:02.8), Jason Quezada (51st, 24:22.1) and Evair Aguirre (63rd, 25:29.5).

Next up for the Pirates will be the UC Riverside Invitational, which will take place on Saturday, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
