COSTA MESA - Led by a pair of goals from Beth Krikorian, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team notched its first win of the season with a 3-0 win over rival Golden West on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.
Brianna Vanderwal added a goal of her own for the Pirates (1-5-1, 1-2-1 in conference), while Loren Kortizija added two assists and goalkeeper Katie Johnson dished out an assist of her own.
The scoring began in the game's 33rd minute when Kortizija sent a pass toward the Rustlers' goal, where Krikorian (pictured left) was able to finish with a nice sliding shot past GWC goalkeeper Kendall Phelan for a 1-0 Pirates' advantage.
In the second half, the Pirates used a strong tailwind to help keep the game inside the Rustlers' side of the field. In the 67th minute, a Kortizija corner kick found the foot of Brianna Vanderwal and the freshman was able to slip her shot past Phelan for a 2-0 lead.
Johnson, who finished with two saves, sent a long clearing kick to a breaking Krikorian and the freshman forward used a nice touch to avoid the charging Rustler goalkeeper, then buried a shot into the back of the net to cap off the scoring.
Phelan finished with five saves as GWC was outshot 15-3 in the game.
The Pirates will continue conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Irvine Valley to take on the Lasers, beginning at 3 p.m.
