Women's Volleyball: Pirates make quick work of Cypress
Wednesday, October 03, 2007

COSTA MESA - There was plenty of work to go around for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team and all took part in Wednesday's three-game sweep over visiting Cypress.

With a match-high 12 kills by Jacqi Reed, the top-ranked Pirates posted a 30-15, 30-16, 30-21 win to improve to 8-1 overall, 2-0 in Orange Empire Conference play.

Adding to the Pirates' offense included Dierdre Fiapai (seven kills), Rebecca Lowe (five kills) and Jenna Harp (four kills), while Kayla Cutler's 13 digs paced the defense. Setter Emily Lyon posted 37 assists and posted four kills of her own.

OCC jumped out quickly on the Chargers (4-10, 0-2) in the opening game, jumping out to a 19-6 lead. With the offense working well, the smaller Chargers had difficulty getting to the Pirates' bigger hitters.

In Game 2, another quick lead by OCC (18-9) was just too much to overcome, despite a nice offensive night by Cypress outside hitter Teresa Hernandez, who led the way with nine kills.

It was more of the same in Game 3 as the Pirates never trailed throughout the entire match and led quickly 18-10 before a mini-run by the Chargers cut the lead in half, 18-14.

From there, OCC went on an 8-2 run of its own and never looked back.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday when they host OEC rival Fullerton, beginning at 7 p.m.
