Women's Soccer: Pirates falter to Cypress, 4-1
Friday, October 05, 2007

COSTA MESA - After missing some early opportunities, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team watched the Cypress Chargers cash in on theirs en route to a 4-1 Orange Empire Conference win for the guests at the OCC Soccer Complex.

With a slighly favorable crosswind, the Pirates opened the game with some good scoring chances, but some good saves and some errant shots proved costly for Coast.

In the fourth minute, OCC's best scoring chance of the half was on the foot of midfielder Stephanie Brown and the freshman midfielder managed to slip a shot past Cypress' diving netminder Kassandra Imbrogno (five saves), but a Chargers' teammate managed to kick the ball out of harm's way before it reached the back of the net.

Just 11 minutes later, Jessica McMaster scored the first of two first-half goals, putting Cypress (8-1-3, 4-1-1 in conference) up for good.

In the second half, Cypress tacked on two more goals from Samantha Jones and Natalie Farah before Pirate sophomore defender Loren Kortizija (pictured left) took a free kick and bent a shot over a wall of Cypress defenders and around Imbrogno for OCC's lone score in the 76th minute.

Katie Johnson had three saves for Coast (1-7-2, 1-4-2).

OCC returns to action on Tuesday at Riverside, beginning at 3 p.m.
