COSTA MESA - As deflating as Friday's loss to Santa Ana was, Tuesday's dramatic 2-1 win over Cypress could not have come at a better time. "You could see that the guys were down after Friday and we came out kind of down today, but we hung tough and picked up a huge win for us," OCC assistant coach Glenn Strachan said. "Hopefully this win gives our entire team a shot in the arm and we can carry that momentum for a while. There is still a ton of time to do some damage in this conference. Anything can happen." Following a scoreless first half, Cypress (3-7-3, 0-3-2 in conference) took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute when Gerardo Garcia picked up a misplayed ball from outside the box and ripped a 20-yard topspin shot that went over Pirate goalkeeper Dane Fernandez and into the top portion of the net. OCC (6-4-3, 2-2-1) wasted no time to even things up again as Adam Hare slipped a nice pass across the field onto the foot of Jordan Joseph and the sophomore beat Chargers' netminder Giovanni Guzman with a shot into the lower-left corner of the goal in the 53rd minute. It stayed that way the rest of the half before the Pirates sent a ball down low and began peppering the Chargers' goal with shots. One shot was stopped by a defender and another two were denied by Guzman before Kyle Schneekluth buried a shot from about 10 yards out into the upper-right corner of the goal in the 88th minute to seal the victory for the hosts. Guzman finished with 10 saves for Cypress, while Hernandez posted seven for the Pirates. The Pirates will return to action on Friday at Golden West, beginning at 3 p.m.
