COSTA MESA -- Trying to beat one of the top teams in the state is tough enough, but to try and beat that same team shorthanded was just too much to ask for the Orange Coast College women's soccer team. Undefeated Santiago Canyon took advantage of the Pirates' shorthanded situation and shut out the hosts, 6-0, on Friday in Orange Empire Conference action. Trailing 1-0 at the 31st minute mark, a second goal was knocked away by OCC defender Brianna Vanderwal, but the official gave her a red card for intentionally knocking the ball away from the goal with her hand. From there, the Hawks (15-0, 11-0 in conference) made it 2-0 on a penalty kick by Kaitlin Thulin and SCC never looked back. Within the next six minutes, SCC notched three more goals -- two by Sarah Califf and one by Tatiana Dos Santos -- and the Hawks cruised from there. The Hawks notched their sixth goal in the 81st minute by Melissa Griffith off an assist by Katie Marshall, her second helper of the afternoon. Califf finished with three goals, while Thulin notched a goal and two assists for the Hawks. SCC outshot the Pirates 24-5, giving Hawks' goalkeeper Stephanie Cottam (two saves) plenty of offensive support. OCC keepers Katie Johnson (nine saves) and Heather Bystrom (six saves) each made several top-quality saves to keep the Hawks from further offensive success. Next for the Pirates will be a road matchup with Golden West on Tuesday, beginning at 6 p.m. before returning home to face Irvine Valley on Friday at 3 p.m.
