IRVINE -- Being the two-time defending state champion, the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team knows that each opponent will bring its very best at them and in the always-tough Orange Empire Conference, that's a tall order to handle.
On Friday, Orange Empire Conference leaders Irvine Valley overcame a tough first game and dispatched the Pirates, 25-30, 30-18, 30-17, 30-25 to remain unbeaten (14-0, 7-0 in OEC).
With teams like Fullerton, Irvine Valley and Golden West all fighting for the state's top spot, the Pirates are quickly finding out what needs to be improved upon as the season progresses. The Rustlers last week and the Lasers on Friday both found some success with aggressive serving, forcing passing errors that led to Pirate mistakes.
That wasn't the case early on as Coast (11-3, 5-2) controlled its game and prevailed in Game 1, but it was all IVC the rest of the way.
Led by Chelsea Pavlik's 25-kill, 10-dig performance, the Lasers cruised through Games 2 and 3 by keeping the Pirates on their heels with their strong play at the net and at serve.
Jacqi Reed had 15 kills to lead Coast, while Rebecca Lowe added 13 and Jessica Roy chipped in 11.
OCC returns to action on Wednesday at home against Saddleback, beginning at 7 p.m.
